Parents, Guardians, Teachers

BE ALERT!

Parents, guardians and teachers need to keep their eyes open for the subtle signs of drug abuse in kids. The abuse of prescription and OTC (over-the-counter) drugs is on the rise and the effects on our kids can be devastating. Some of the more common slang terms for these types of drugs are:

 - “Skittling”: abuse of cold tablets containing Dextromethorphan.

 - “Robotripping”: Large doses consumed of anything containing Dextromethorphan, such as; Robitussin, Coricidin, or NyQuill. Other slang terms for this would include “Dexing” or “Tussing”.

 - “Kiddie Dope”: Slang term given to prescription drugs.

 - “Kibbles and Bits”: Slang term for Ritilin. Other terms are; “R”, “R-Ball”, “Vit”, “Smart Drug”, and “west Coast”.

 - “Pharming”: The consumption of any mixture of prescription drugs.

w “Pharming Parties”: Parties at which guests supply and con-

sume multiple script drugs.

 - “Hillbilly Heroin”: Slang term for Oxycontin (painkiller)

 - “Author”: The term used for the Doctor that writes illegal scripts.

Prescription drugs are not only abused in order to get “high”, they are also abused in order to lose weight, stay awake, and to focus better for big exams. These and other OTC drugs are readily available in most home medicine cabinets.

Another form of teen drug abuse you may want to be aware of is commonly known as “huffing.” Huffing is the purposeful inhalation of chemical vapors in order to achieve an altered mental or physical state. Some of the most common chemicals that are inhaled are from ordinary aerosol cans such as; paint, deodorants, hair products, and cooking products. Common results of huffing can be permanent brain damage and death.

If you suspect that your child or a child you know is abusing prescription or OTC drugs, please contact the Nation Alcohol/Drug Abuse Hotline 1-800-662-4357. Or, if you are a teen and need to talk to someone regarding drug abuse, please call the Teen Help Line 1-800-400-0900. These are just two of the many hotlines available to help you move in the right direction. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your family’s health  please contact the Tilden Community Hospital and Rural health Clinic.

Stay alert to the above symptoms, the health and well being of our children depends on you!
